Rodding it hard is how you crack a joint that's held since before the war. Those lines want reading first and jetting gently after. The 1960s and 70s estates are a different story. Places like Ballybeg, Lisduggan and Kingsmeadow have pipework that's now fifty or sixty years old, and every tree planted when the estates went in is fully mature. Roots and sagging joints do most of the damage, and the same houses tend to block in the same spots year after year, which is genuinely useful to know when you've been called to the street before. Then there's the newer end of the city — Butlerstown, Gracedieu, the builds pushing further out the Dunmore Road. Modern PVC pipe, proper falls, nothing wrong with the drain at all. When those block it's almost always what went down them: fat poured down the sink, wipes flushed one at a time until the line packs solid, a nappy that shouldn't have gone near a toilet. Different cause, same result, and high-pressure jetting clears them properly because it scours the pipe wall clean instead of punching a hole through the middle of the blockage and leaving the rest to close over again in six weeks. City terraces bring one more wrinkle that catches people out. Older terraced houses often share a drainage run out to the main sewer, so your own pipes can be perfectly clear and you'll still get water backing up outside your back door — because the blockage is three doors down. Nothing you buy in a bottle will touch that. It needs the right manhole opened first to find where the line actually stops, and then the whole shared run cleared.
